REVIEWS Elaine DeLack is a multi-talented, energetic and determined woman who, faced with a crippling disease that threatened to destroy her and her family, set out to unravel its mechanism of action, and then counter its effects with a formulation of her own design. Along the way, she ran headlong into an unthinking, hidebound and profit-oriented medical establishment determined to preserve its place in the hierarchy of patient care, and the privilege and power that come with that position. Her story is one of determination, perseverance and integrity in the face of hostility, suspicion and outright abuse. If you didn’t have an opinion about organizations like the National MS Society before, you certainly will, as I did, after reading this book. Moreover, you will have an abiding admiration for Elaine, who never strayed from the path she started out on, and ultimately realized her goal of being able to help others cope with this maddening and discouraging disease.
I read Elaine's book and my doctor agreed that the Procarin Patch might alleviate some of my symptoms. He's very happy to write prescriptions for and offer his own suggestions to find ways to help me to use the wheelchair I've used for 6 years less and less. I know I'll eventually give my walking aids to someone else with debilitating Chronic Lyme Disease-induced MS. I can't wait to walk into my neurologist's office and have a little dance with him as he's promised we'd do when I've kicked the MS and walk with only the aid of my hand around my husband's arm. I hope to meet and have lunch with Elaine at that time, as well.
After reading the book I realize there are many stumbling blocks to getting both the medical field and the pharmaceutical field to accept any literature about new treatments for diseases that are not developed by either a doctor or a drug company. One of the most disturbing parts of the book was that the NMSS is so unwilling to give the author any consideration when the Porkarin has helped her with her MS symptoms. I think it is a great read and very enlightening
